Rhododendron and Phytophthora: why ponticum is killing larch and oak woodlands

The link between Rhododendron ponticum and Phytophthora ramorum, and why Forestry England and NRW prioritise its clearance.

Rhododendron ponticum is the headline conservation invasive of upland Britain — but its impact is not limited to shading out the understorey. Its role as a sporulating host for Phytophthora ramorum has been the single biggest cause of larch mortality in Welsh and West Country woodlands since 2010, and the disease has now jumped to oak in several locations.

How the pathogen cycle works

Phytophthora ramorum sporulates abundantly on rhododendron foliage in warm wet weather. Spores wash and blow onto adjacent larch needles, where they cause stem and bleeding cankers that kill mature trees within two seasons. Removing the rhododendron breaks the sporulation cycle.

Clearance method

  • Mechanical cut at base in October–March (winter clearance reduces bird-nesting conflict).
  • Stump treatment with approved glyphosate or triclopyr within 30 minutes of cutting.
  • Removal or on-site chipping of brash — burning requires DEFRA Plant Health licence in PRZ.
  • Regrowth monitoring and spot-spray for 3–5 years.

Biosecurity

Boot-wash, tool sanitation and clean-vehicle protocol between sites is essential — the pathogen moves on soil and plant fragments as readily as on the wind.

What this page can't tell you

  • Guidance is general. Identification, treatment choice and timescales can only be confirmed by a site visit — photographs alone are indicative.
  • Lender and insurer requirements vary by institution and change over time. We state what is typically accepted, not what any named lender will accept on your case.
  • Guarantee (IBG) eligibility depends on the plan chosen, the survey findings and the underwriter's acceptance. It is not automatic.
  • Legal points summarise published law and guidance current at the review date. They are not legal advice.
