Rhododendron ponticum: clearing a woodland without making it worse
Why ornamental rhododendron is a Forestry Commission priority — and what a five-year clearance programme actually looks like.
Rhododendron ponticum was introduced to British estates in the 1700s for hunting cover. Two centuries later it dominates large parts of upland woodland, shading out the floor, acidifying the soil, and acting as a host for Phytophthora ramorum — a notifiable pathogen lethal to larch and several oak species.
Why it's a priority, not just an eyesore
- Listed under Schedule 9 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.
- Forestry Commission and NRW prioritise eradication on woodland and SSSI sites.
- Native ground flora — bluebells, wood sorrel, ferns — disappears within a few seasons of canopy closure.
What a clearance programme looks like
Year one is mechanical or hand clearance, with biosecure tooling moving between compartments. Cut stumps are immediately treated with an approved herbicide — leaving them untreated guarantees regrowth from the root collar. Years two through five are follow-up sweeps to catch seedlings and any stumps that sprout.
The biosecurity bit
On any site with confirmed or suspected Phytophthora, we follow the Forestry Commission's Keep It Clean protocols: dedicated tools per compartment, boot-wash stations at every entry, and arisings either burned on site or removed under a movement licence. It slows the work down by perhaps 20% — and it's non-negotiable.
