Swansea, the Tawe corridor and the legacy of post-industrial knotweed
Why Swansea has more knotweed per square mile than almost any other UK city, and what we do about it.
Swansea's industrial history left it with some of the most heavily knotweed-infested ground in the UK. Copper, zinc and steel works along the Tawe spent the 19th and 20th centuries moving spoil up and down the valley, and knotweed rode on every truckload from at least the 1920s onwards.
Why the Tawe is so bad
Three things compound: post-industrial brownfield with constant ground disturbance; a major river corridor that floats rhizome fragments downstream; and decades of informal tipping along old works perimeters. The result is that on many former industrial sites, the rhizome is not a single clump — it is a continuous mat under several hectares.

- Lower Swansea Valley regeneration sites — almost universally affected.
- Mumbles and Sketty — domestic gardens, often originating from imported topsoil.
Surveying a Swansea site properly
We routinely deploy ground-probe surveys and historical map overlays before quoting. A site that looks like a single 6 m² stand at the surface will, two metres down, often reveal rhizome extending under adjacent plots. Quote on the surface alone and you under-price the job by a factor of three.

- Per square kilometre, yes — by a wide margin. Swansea's industrial legacy concentrated soil movement along the Tawe over many decades; Cardiff's spread is more diffuse and follows watercourses rather than works sites.
