Knotweed on the allotment: site-wide thinking, not plot-by-plot
Why allotment associations need a single coordinated treatment strategy — and what it looks like in practice.
Allotments are knotweed paradise. Continuous undisturbed soil, regular fork-and-spade disturbance that fragments rhizome, plot turnover that brings in soil from elsewhere, and rarely any coordinated maintenance. We see plenty of sites where one stand has, over a decade, become twelve.
Why plot-by-plot fails
Treat plot 7 and ignore plots 6 and 8 and the rhizome simply moves a metre sideways. Two seasons later you are back where you started.
What a site-wide programme looks like
- Initial walkover and stand mapping for the whole site.
- Single agreed contractor with PA1 + PA6AW certificates.
- Stem injection on small contained stands; foliar spray on open communal areas.
- Three-year programme with annual stem-count reporting to the committee.
