Spring 2026 invasive species checklist for UK property owners
A 10-minute walk around your boundary in March can save thousands later — here's what to look for, species by species.
Most invasive species are easiest to deal with when they are smallest. A 10-minute walk around the boundary of your property in early March, with a phone camera, takes you 90% of the way to early detection on the six species that produce nearly all our domestic call-outs.
What to look for
- Japanese knotweed: red-purple asparagus-like shoots from a central crown.
- Giant hogweed: large rosettes of jagged leaves near watercourses or damp shaded ground.
- Himalayan balsam: early pinkish stems with leaves in whorls of three — appears later, April–May.
- Running bamboo: new canes emerging more than 50 cm from the parent clump.
- Buddleia: arching shrub seedlings in walls, gutters and roof valleys.
- Cotoneaster: woody shrubs with persistent berries on walls, cliffs and limestone outcrops.
Photograph everything you are not sure about
Stem detail, leaf laid flat with something for scale, the wider clump or shrub. Email the photo for free written identification — we reply within 24 hours and there is no charge for ID alone.
What to do if you find something
Do not cut, mow or strim it — fragmentation makes most of these worse. Photograph, mark the location and get a survey booked while the diary still has spring availability.

What this page can't tell you
- Guidance is general. Identification, treatment choice and timescales can only be confirmed by a site visit — photographs alone are indicative.
- Lender and insurer requirements vary by institution and change over time. We state what is typically accepted, not what any named lender will accept on your case.
- Guarantee (IBG) eligibility depends on the plan chosen, the survey findings and the underwriter's acceptance. It is not automatic.
- Legal points summarise published law and guidance current at the review date. They are not legal advice.
