Himalayan Balsam: why pulling alone never works (and what does)
One missed riverbank fires 800 seeds per plant up to 7 metres downstream. Catchment thinking is the only way to win.
Himalayan Balsam looks harmless — pretty pink flowers, fleshy stems, easy to pull by hand. The trouble is that every plant you miss flings up to 800 seeds across a 7-metre arc the moment its pods ripen, and those seeds remain viable in the soil for nearly two years.
Why upstream-first matters
Balsam follows water. Seeds float, wash downstream after rain, and re-colonise any cleared bank below them within a single season. Pulling the bottom of a catchment without addressing the top is wasted effort.
How we run a programme
- Map the whole catchment and walk it before flowering.
- Hand-pull or strim from the top down, finishing before late June.
- Return for a second sweep in late July to catch laggards.
- Repeat for at least three consecutive seasons — that's how long the seed bank takes to exhaust.
Co-ordinating with neighbours
We've taken on river stretches where four landowners share a single bank. Without all four agreeing to pull on the same fortnight, the work is decorative at best. We're happy to write the joint method statement and run the schedule.
