Glyphosate concerns: should you worry, and are there alternatives?

We use glyphosate every working day and we take questions about its safety seriously. Here is where the science actually sits in 2026.
The regulatory position
EFSA reviewed glyphosate in 2023 and found no critical areas of concern. The European Commission re-authorised it for 10 years; the UK followed with its own approval. The IARC classification of 'probable carcinogen' remains, but at occupational use levels with PPE the risk is comparable to many household chemicals.
When we don't use it
- Within 5 m of certain watercourses without an Environment Agency / NRW permit.
- On certified organic land.
- On client request — we discuss excavation alternatives.
Alternatives that actually work on knotweed
Mechanical excavation with off-site disposal or on-site burial in an engineered cell. That is essentially the only chemical-free professional option on an established stand. Steam, foam and electric weeders kill foliage but cannot reach the deep rhizome.
