Treating giant hogweed on a riverbank: the three-season programme that works

Catchment-scale control of Heracleum mantegazzianum requires PPE, aquatic-approved herbicide, and patience — here's the method we use across South Wales catchments.

Giant hogweed on a watercourse is the worst-case scenario: seed travels downstream, recolonises every gravel bar for kilometres, and exposes anglers, walkers and children to a serious burn risk. The good news is that with a disciplined three-season programme it is one of the more reliably eradicable invasives we work with.

Year 1: knock-down

April–May foliar spray at the rosette stage with aquatic-approved glyphosate, applied by knapsack with a long-lance shield. Mature flowering plants are cut at the taproot 10 cm below ground in June before seed-set. Site signage and exclusion bunting for the duration of the season.

Year 2: seed-bank attrition

Repeat rosette spray in April. The number of plants drops typically 70–90% from year one. Any plants reaching flower are cut before seed-set. Bare ground is monitored for native recolonisation — we deliberately do not over-spray, to allow grass and umbellifers to compete.

Year 3: monitoring and mop-up

Spot-spray only. Most catchments are at <5% of year one density. A final survey at the end of year three closes the programme and triggers a written clearance certificate.

What this page can't tell you

  • Guidance is general. Identification, treatment choice and timescales can only be confirmed by a site visit — photographs alone are indicative.
  • Lender and insurer requirements vary by institution and change over time. We state what is typically accepted, not what any named lender will accept on your case.
  • Guarantee (IBG) eligibility depends on the plan chosen, the survey findings and the underwriter's acceptance. It is not automatic.
  • Legal points summarise published law and guidance current at the review date. They are not legal advice.
