DIY knotweed treatment: every reason it almost always fails
Garden centre glyphosate, hot water, salt, weed-killer fabric — what we see when homeowners have tried it themselves.
We are sympathetic. Knotweed treatment costs money, glyphosate is on every garden centre shelf, and YouTube is full of people who claim to have killed a clump with a 5-litre canister. Here is why those claims rarely survive a third growing season.
Concentration matters
Domestic glyphosate products contain around 7.2 g/L of active ingredient. Professional injection product is 360–490 g/L. The rhizome network on a mature stand can run 7 m horizontally and 3 m deep — the plant will simply translocate the dilute dose into a small fraction of the root system, kill that fraction, and regrow from the rest.
Mechanical methods make it worse
- Strimming fragments rhizome and creates new shoots within metres.
- Digging exposes you to controlled-waste rules — you cannot legally dispose of knotweed soil in domestic refuse.
- Hot water and salt kill the surface but never reach the rhizome.
When DIY actually does work
On a small first-year shoot from a fresh fragment, repeated cutting and crown-digging can occasionally win. On any established stand — anything you can identify on sight — DIY is a delay, not a cure.
