What knotweed removal actually costs in the UK in 2025
Real numbers — surveys, herbicide programmes, excavation, IBGs — and what makes a quote go up or down.
Pricing in this industry is opaque, and that suits the worse end of it. Here are the numbers we actually quote in 2025, why they vary, and the questions to ask any other contractor before you sign.
Surveys
Fixed-fee survey with a written report and management plan: from £295 + VAT for a domestic visit within our normal travel area. Larger commercial sites or those needing a full RICS-style report cost more, but the fee is always fixed up front.
Herbicide programmes
Domestic programmes for stands up to roughly 50 square metres: £1,500 to £4,500 + VAT, inclusive of a 5- or 10-year insurance-backed guarantee. The variables are area, access, the number of visits per season, and the IBG term.
Excavation
Domestic excavation projects start at around £4,000 + VAT for a small, well-accessed garden. A typical mid-size dig with off-site disposal lands between £8,000 and £20,000. Commercial dig-and-dump on a development site is priced per cubic metre and depends almost entirely on how far the spoil has to travel.
What pushes a quote up
- Restricted access — narrow gates, terraced rear gardens, no machine route.
- Proximity to structures, services and boundaries that need protecting.
- Spoil disposal distance — landfill mileage is the single biggest variable on excavation jobs.
- Longer IBG term (10-year IBGs cost more than 5-year).
- Sites with multiple stands or a long rhizome run.
Questions to ask any quote
- Is it fixed-fee, or are there day-rates and contingencies?
- Is the IBG included, and for how long?
- Who underwrites the IBG, and is it assignable on sale?
- Are PA1/PA6 certificates and waste-carrier licences available on request?
