What invasive species removal actually costs in the UK in 2026

Updated 2026 pricing for Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed, bamboo, rhododendron, balsam and buddleia — surveys, treatment programmes, excavation and IBGs.

Every January we republish the numbers we actually quote, so homeowners, solicitors and developers can sanity-check the prices they are seeing from other contractors. Here is the 2026 update, species by species, with the reasons behind the year-on-year movement.

Surveys (all species)

Fixed-fee written survey with PCA-aligned management plan: from £325 + VAT for a domestic visit within our normal travel area (South Wales, M4 corridor, West Midlands, Severn Vale). RICS-style pre-purchase reports from £495 + VAT. Commercial Phase 1 invasive-species walkovers are quoted per hectare.

Japanese knotweed in 2026

  • Herbicide programme (domestic, ≤50 m²): £1,600–£4,800 + VAT inclusive of 5- or 10-year IBG.
  • Stem-injection (preferred near watercourses and ornamentals): from £2,200 + VAT.
  • Excavation with off-site disposal (domestic): £4,500–£22,000 + VAT depending on volume and landfill mileage.
  • On-site bund burial (development sites only): from £85/m³ + VAT plus engineering oversight.

Giant hogweed

Two- to three-season foliar and stem-injection programme with PPE-led visits and on-site signage: £1,250–£3,900 + VAT for a domestic riverside stand. Public-realm contracts (school grounds, footpath networks) are quoted per linear metre — typically £18–£32/m + VAT.

Himalayan balsam

Hand-pull and strim programmes are inexpensive but require whole-catchment co-ordination. Domestic stands: £450–£1,400 + VAT per season. Catchment partnerships with Rivers Trusts: priced per km of bank.

Rhododendron ponticum

Mechanical clearance with stump treatment and 3–5 year regrowth control: £2.40–£6.80 per m² + VAT depending on density and slope. SSSI and ancient woodland sites carry a biosecurity surcharge (£280–£650 per site visit) for boot-wash and tool sanitation.

Buddleia (structural)

Cut, drill-and-fill stump treatment plus masonry pointing repair: from £380 + VAT for a single self-seeded shrub on a domestic chimney; £1,800–£12,000 + VAT for industrial roofs, retaining walls and railway-adjacent structures. Cherry-picker or scaffold access is the largest variable.

Bamboo (running varieties)

  • Full excavation of rhizome network (domestic): £3,800–£18,000 + VAT.
  • HDPE root-barrier installation (1000-gauge, 2.5 m deep): £140–£195 per linear metre + VAT.
  • Staged cut-and-treat programmes: from £1,200 + VAT per season.

Why 2026 prices have moved

  • Standard-rate landfill tax rises to £103.70/tonne in April 2026 — this is the single biggest cost driver on excavation.
  • PA1/PA6 operative wages have lifted with the National Living Wage uplift.
  • Insurance-backed guarantee premiums have risen modestly with FCA capital requirements on the small underwriters.
  • Diesel, HDPE root-barrier sheeting and skilled-trade masonry repair have all risen above headline inflation.

Splitting payment over two years

On herbicide programmes we routinely split the price across the treatment seasons — typically 40% in year one and the balance split over the following years. This keeps the cashflow manageable for homeowners and means the IBG only activates on completion of payment.

Frequently asked questions

Are 2026 prices fixed for the duration of a multi-year herbicide programme?
Yes. Once we have signed your contract, the programme price is locked for all subsequent seasons — even if landfill tax or wages rise again before year three.
Can the IBG be transferred when I sell the house in 2026?
Yes. The insurance-backed guarantee is assignable to successive owners at no cost when ownership changes at completion. There are no transfer or assignment fees.
Do you charge for an initial site visit?
We charge a fixed survey fee from £325 + VAT. Photo identification by email is free.

What this page can't tell you

  • Guidance is general. Identification, treatment choice and timescales can only be confirmed by a site visit — photographs alone are indicative.
  • Lender and insurer requirements vary by institution and change over time. We state what is typically accepted, not what any named lender will accept on your case.
  • Guarantee (IBG) eligibility depends on the plan chosen, the survey findings and the underwriter's acceptance. It is not automatic.
  • Legal points summarise published law and guidance current at the review date. They are not legal advice.
