Biosecurity on UK invasive species sites: the 2026 protocol

Tool sanitation, boot wash, vehicle protocol and waste segregation — the operational discipline that prevents one infested site from contaminating the next.

Almost every recolonisation of a cleared site that we are asked to remediate traces back to a single biosecurity lapse — usually a contractor's boots, a hire-fit excavator bucket, or a topsoil delivery from an unsourced supplier.

Boot wash

Stiff brush, disinfectant footbath and clean-boot bag at the site exit. Operatives change into clean footwear before re-entering the vehicle.

Tool sanitation

Loppers, saws, drill bits, knapsack nozzles — all cleaned to bare metal between sites. Phytophthora risk warrants 70% IMS wipe or chemical disinfection of cutting edges.

Vehicle protocol

Sheeted load bed, segregated tool storage, jet-wash of wheels and arches before leaving a knotweed site. Tracked plant requires a dedicated wash-down bay.

Waste segregation

Controlled-waste soil is bagged and ticketed at the dig face. Mixing with general spoil contaminates the entire load — a £6,000 dig-and-dump turns into a £14,000 one.

What this page can't tell you

  • Guidance is general. Identification, treatment choice and timescales can only be confirmed by a site visit — photographs alone are indicative.
  • Lender and insurer requirements vary by institution and change over time. We state what is typically accepted, not what any named lender will accept on your case.
  • Guarantee (IBG) eligibility depends on the plan chosen, the survey findings and the underwriter's acceptance. It is not automatic.
  • Legal points summarise published law and guidance current at the review date. They are not legal advice.
