Specifying a bamboo root barrier that actually works

HDPE gauge, depth, overlap and capping detail — the specification points that separate a working barrier from a wasted weekend.

Root barriers are sold in DIY-friendly thinner gauges that have no business going anywhere near a mature stand of Phyllostachys. Here is the specification we actually install on domestic and commercial sites.

Material

1000-gauge (1mm) HDPE sheeting at minimum. Geotextile-bonded composite products outperform plain HDPE in stony ground. Avoid LDPE and woven products — rhizomes find the weave within 18 months.

Depth and exposure

2.5 m below finished ground level is the working minimum for Phyllostachys aurea, P. nigra and P. bambusoides. 50 mm exposed above soil prevents over-topping by surface-running rhizomes — easy to miss and the single most common cause of breach.

Joints and corners

  • 100 mm sheet overlap at every joint.
  • Stainless steel clamping strip with M6 bolts at 200 mm centres.
  • External corner returns of 300 mm minimum.
  • Sealed termination against any masonry with stainless flashing.

Backfill

Use clean imported subsoil for backfill against the barrier face. Re-using rhizome-contaminated spoil is the cause of nearly every barrier failure we are asked to investigate after the fact.

What this page can't tell you

  • Guidance is general. Identification, treatment choice and timescales can only be confirmed by a site visit — photographs alone are indicative.
  • Lender and insurer requirements vary by institution and change over time. We state what is typically accepted, not what any named lender will accept on your case.
  • Guarantee (IBG) eligibility depends on the plan chosen, the survey findings and the underwriter's acceptance. It is not automatic.
  • Legal points summarise published law and guidance current at the review date. They are not legal advice.
